Film Review: SCARY LITTLE FUCKERS (2015) (Short Film)

SCARY LITTLE FUCKERS ** U.S.A. 2015 Dir: Nathan Suher. 23 mins

A very broadly played GREMLINS riff in which an obnoxious, alcoholic father buys toothy, furry creatures from a weird curio shop, and the only rule involved (never put them in the same cage…) is broken to allow for festive mayhem. The under-used, glowing-eyed, long-tailed critter-puppets are fun though too much mayhem (notably the savaging of a carol singer troupe) takes place off-camera. The gags largely fall flat (notably a lesbian joke coming to you from 1988), and the cast strain abrasively for laughs, particularly the simple 15 year old (more like 25) son character who is in receipt of the “scary little fuckers” in the first place. At least there’s one good line: “You gave me Herpes for Christmas. Thanks a lot, Dad”.
